Ares is commonly the patron of warriors (in concept, not necessarily by class. A cleric or mage who fights to defend his/her country or king is still a warrior in the eyes of Ares). He admires those who fight with honor and those who fight against equal or superior enemies. He has no particular like of bullies, of those who fight dishonorably or of those who back down from a worthy fight with a worthy opponent.
His preferred avatar is a dwarven warrior in finely crafted, dark red plate mail with a shield and a broad sword.
